One of the most haunting works of the 20th century is the opera Dialogues des Camélites (Conversations of the Carmelite Women) by Francis Poulenc. In December 2013, a recording of a sensational production of this work was made at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris – with a star-studded French cast: Patricia Petibon, Véronique Gens, Sophie Koch and Sandrine Piau. The Philharmonia Orchestra was conducted by Jérémie Rhorer, one of the great all-rounders of the music scene, with expertise ranging from early music to modern. in 1957, the French composer Francis Poulenc staged the opera Dialogues de Carmélites at La Scala in Milan – a story from the nunnery of Compiègne against the backdrop of the revolutionary reign of terror in 1794. The nuns’ martyrdom under the guillotine in the last act stands at the end of an examination of questions of faith that also moved Poulenc throughout his life, inspired by novels such as The Last at the Scaffold by Gertrud von Le Fort. The plot around the young novice Blanche (Patricia Petibon) deals with the question of the meaning of martyrdom – expressed by Poulenc in very tangible music committed to the great classical traditions. This story, told in individual tableaux, was staged by internationally successful director Olivier Py, whose diverse talents in opera, theater, and film inform his acclaimed directorial work. |
