In “Jenůfa,” two courageous women struggle for happiness against the backdrop of a cramped and confining rural community. Leoš Janáček’s score, inspired by the traditional folk melodies of his Moravian homeland, movingly depicts Jenůfa’s evolution from hope to despair to radiant happiness. Hungarian conductor Henrik Nánási accompanies Asmik Grigorian in her highly anticipated Royal Opera House debut in the title role alongside Karita Mattila as Kostelnička and the overall excellent London ensemble. |
