In contrast to the literary model La folle journée ou le mariage de Figaro, which was banned by Emperor Joseph II, Mozart’s opera was allowed to be performed in Vienna. However, she was dismissed a few days after the premiere and only achieved the desired success in Prague. From then on the work enjoyed numerous performances Giorgio Strehler was one of the most famous theatre directors in Europe. In his Milan Piccolo Teatro he created outstanding Bertolt Brecht- and William Shakespeare interpretations. As an opera director he was active at all important opera houses of the world, especially at the Scala in Milan. There he designed for example Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra (1971), Macbeth (1975) and 1980 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. This legendary production of Mozart’s masterpiece is now available with the grandiose Diana Damrau as Susanna and Ildebrando D’Arcangelo as Figaro in a 2006 recording. |
