In recent years, the widely-acclaimed series of recordings of the music of the masterly Swiss composer Fritz Brun has been pivotal in the rehabilitation of this greatly gifted musician as one of the finest Swiss composers of his generation, and certainly the most important of Swiss symphonic composers. This latest issue very finely played and recorded by the main orchestra of Bratislava under the vastly experienced baton of Adriano, brings the Eighth Symphony to commercial disc for the first time, and Brun’s finely-judged orchestration of three songs for contralto and orchestra by his distinguished colleague Othmar Schoeck – a homage from one fine composer to another – dating from the period of the Great War. A most valuable issue, fully up to the high standards of earlier issues.
