The 3 SACD set comes with a lavishly illustrated book including a complete libretto with an English translation. Jeremy Commons gives a detailed account of the story behind the opera and its composition.

The 1824 premiere of Alessandro nell’ Indie in Naples initially gave Giovani Pacini one of his most uncomfortable evenings: The audience seemed literally to sit on its hands and showed little reaction, positive or negative. At the second performance, King Ferdinand IV intervened in person and dictated the applause, so that the work became a success after all, and Pacini was even able to establish himself definitively as Naples’ most popular composer. Perhaps the initially cool reaction was due to the old libretto by Pietro Metastasio, which had already been frequently set to music in the 18th century, and whose forced happy ending was no longer convincing in the 19th century. Musically, however, Pacini burns off an inspired bel canto fireworks display in this work that could hardly be more bravura. A real treat for the proven specialists of OPERA RARA, Bruce Ford, Jennifer Larmore and Laura Claycomb, who once again snatch an interesting operatic rarity from oblivion with breathtaking technique and high musicality.
