Ensemble Il Trittico: Jan Schultsz (piano), Jonathan Allen (violin) & Daniel Pezzotti (cello)

Prior to this release, the Ensemble Il Trittico (Jonathan Allen, violin; Daniel Pezzotti, violoncello; Jan Schultsz, piano; David Greenlees, viola) had dedicated itself to the compositions of Joseph Joachim Raff (1822-1882), with the complete “Piano-Trios” as well the “Piano-Quintets”. This CD represents the first recording of Raff’s piano quartets.

Joseph Joachim Raff was ahead of his time by at least a century–as evidenced by the fact that instead of following fads and trends, he developed his own, all-encompassing and eclectic aesthetics–which failed to be understood by his contemporaries. For example, instead of portraying excessive feelings of suffering, Raff’s music gives artistic expression to outrage and an indomitable will to overcome difficulties. This distinguishes him from the majority of his contemporaries. The two piano quartets presented on this CD, both first performed in 1877, are examples of this:

“Piano Quartet in G-Major Op. 202 No. 1 Allegro, Allegro molto, Andante quasi adagio, Allegro” “Piano Quartet in C-Minor Op. 202 No. 2 Allegro, Allegro, Larghetto, Allegro”

The accompanying booklet text for this CD was written by Dr. Av rohom Leichtling and is based on an extensive analysis of the two piano quartets which he published on the website of the Joachim Raff Society.

The Trio Il Trittico unites three extraordinary, internationally renowned artists under one unique ensemble banner. Enthusiasm and creativity ensure special artistic experiences, characterized by new performance conventions, humor and the great joy the musicians take even in pure entertainment. Il Trittico dedicates tself to the practice of first performances, both of commissioned compositions by contemporary composers and of rediscovered works formerly forgotten or neglected, and collaborates with selected guest soloists, in this case the violist David Greenlees.
