It is wonderful and perfectly fitting that a work by Maestro Lehár should be the first DVD production in the cpo catalogue: Der Graf von Luxemburg (The Count of Luxembourg) in a lavishly beautiful live recording from last year’s Klangbogen Festival in Vienna at the Theater an der Wien with Bo Skovhus, Juliane Banse, Rainer Trost, and Gabriele Bone in the lead roles. I had originally planned an Audio recording, but then the staging and new version of the text by Michael Schottenberg proved to be so impressive not only to the ear but also to the eye and so thoroughly successful that we hired a camera team on short notice — so that you can now enjoy the visual fireworks together with 5. 1 surround sound. Next to The Merry Widow, The Count of Luxembourg is surely Lehár’s most French and most sparkling operetta, and it is not without reason that it repeatedly resurfaces on the stage. »Bist Du’s, lachendes Glück«: here forty measures are linked to a melody that seems almost endless and exudes an exquisite fin-de-siècle perfume. And not only that is a true stroke of genius!
