Although Simon Mayr is known primarily as the “father of Italian opera,” the German composer also wrote large-scale instrumental and orchestral works.

The “Concerto in D Minor” from 1820 is ingeniously conceived, with each of the four solo instruments presented separately in the successive movements. For example, the first movement is presented by the flute, but the second by the clarinet.

This elegant and lyrical work makes reference to both Beethovenian and folk music.

The compelling “Piano Concerto” reveals the influence of Haydn on Mayr, whereas the “Trio Concertante” was inspired by the vivacity of his operatic compositions.

“Previous encounters with Mayr’s music showed a composer of great skill, especially in his use of instrumental textures but rarely capable of memorable invention, in particular melodic invention. This disc has not changed that impression. Nonetheless, despite this and a short overall playing time, the charms of the Concerto Bergamasco are considerable.
