It is incomprehensible that Joachim Raff’s compositions for choir, whether with or without instrumental accompaniment, despite the popularity and demand for choral music in the second half of the 19th century, do not play a major role in his extensive oeuvre. During the years between 1850 and 1856, when he worked as assistant to Franz Liszt, he completed 12 of his own works for choir and orchestra or instrumental ensemble, as well as eight a cappella choral works. In Raff’s complete oeuvre, his choral music accounts for less than ten percent, although two of his works for choir and orchestra are among his great compositions alongside his operas. |
