Vlado Perlemuter was taught bt Moritz Moskowski before he was admitted to Cortot’s class at the Paris Conservatoire at the age of thirteen. He had the privilege of meeting Maurice Ravel and studying the composer’s entire piano works with him. Ravel was present when later, in 1929, he was one of the first to play them all in public, in two recitals. From 1951 to 1977 he served as one of the most distinguished professors at the Paris Conservatoire while maintaining an active concert career. These are legendary performances from a virtuoso recognised as a unique interpreter of Ravel’s music. From their initial release in 1979 these recordings have won unqualified praise from commentators – “this is playing that has to be heard to be believed. Perlemuter’s ability to conjure up the necessary atmosphere is virtually unique; it is as if Ravel wrote with his potentialities in mind.” “Perlemuter knows better than anyone the laws of performing Ravel’s music. It is a rare privilege to rediscover among such familiar pages new life.” Diapason |
