Her voice is considered today to be perhaps the most beautiful on the Scandinavian music scene. On this release, the outstanding Randi Stene can be heard in a magnificent song cycle and two vocal symphonies from the early 1900s. Musically, Zemlinsky seems to be related to Mahler and Strauss, but is also inspired by Debussy and Ravel – listen to the first of the Six Songs. Maurice Maeterlinck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1911, and the texts for these songs come from the “Quinze chansons”. Schulhoff’s music has been rediscovered and rehabilitated to an astonishing degree. Landschaften and Menschheit, two of his most important early works, were long considered lost or destroyed and have only recently begun to receive attention again: they are proving to be works of remarkable beauty.
