Bach’s Fugue Collection for Frederick the Great The Musical Offering is Bach’s only instrumental work in which the circumstances of its creation are more closely known. It owes its origin to Bach’s two-day visit to the royal court of Frederick II in Potsdam in May 1747. The work received the title “Musicalisches Opfer” from Bach and in his printed preface the composer expressly recalls the Potsdam event, in particular the fulfilment of the royal wish for a “fugue with six obbligato voices”. Ton Koopman and his orchestra give an intimate and delicate performance of this music. |
