Polish Discoveries

Two world wars, the Iron Curtain, and also a lack of modern editions have long prevented a more open and intensive study of 19th-century Polish music outside its country of origin. Among the important Polish composers of this period are without doubt Ignacy Feliks Dobrzyński (1807-1867) and Bruch’s pupil Feliks Nowowiejski (1877-1946), whose oratorio Quo Vadis also won him recognition in Germany, at least before the First World War. The three works recorded here contribute to enriching the still extremely patchy discography of Polish (late) Romanticism beyond Chopin and Szymanowski.
