Avant-garde darling of the public

With the death of Krzysztof Penderecki on 29 March 2020, the music world lost one of the most important composers of the 20th century, who both fascinated and provoked fierce criticism with his consistent transformation from an experimental avant-gardist to an almost mass-market favourite. In 2012 he was able to complete a highly acclaimed recording of his symphonies under his direction on the Polish label DUX (jpc 3641105), but the no less interesting follow-up project to the complete recording of the concerts must now unfortunately remain unfinished. The eighth and ninth installments present several different aspects of his compositional work: on the one hand, the easy transferability of the solo parts of his concertos to other instruments, as described in Vol. 8 with the Flute Concerto written in 2012 for Jean-Pierre Rampal (arranged in 2017 for soprano saxophone) and the Double Concerto for violin and viola from 1995 (arranged in 2018 for accordion), and the juxtaposition of neo-romantic musical language in the Cello Concerto No. 2 (2012) and avant-garde tones in the Sonata for Cello and Orchestra (1964) in Vol. 9.
