Shura Cherkassky was one of the 20th century’s finest pianists. In this recording from 2nd June 1971, which was recently discovered in Cherkassky’s own personal music archive, we hear him at the height of his powers delivering a stunning live performance. This is a substantial recital including 3 sonatas and 4 encore pieces. The Liszt Sonata, for instance, is a remarkable rendition, like no other, in which he plays with an overwhelmingly ferocious drama, glorious sonorous tone and an extraordinarily accurate technique. The Mozart Piano Sonata No.8 is the only known recording of the work by Cherkassky. Reviews BBC Music Magazine December 2013 “This 1971 recital preserves the other-worldly magic of Cherkassky at his best. His spontaneity, delicacy and ferocity are demonstrated in a sparkling, varied programme. – 4 out of 5 stars Gramophone Magazine November 2013 “The piano sound is a little clunky but instantly recognisable as Cherkassky…The Liszt Sonata is occasionally wayward, with some puzzling decisions, but this account is completely and utterly engrossing from start to finish…[the whole recital] is as entertaing as it is compelling. |
