As a member of the legendary French house duo Daft Punk, Thomas Bangalter has written pop history with mega hits like “One more Time” or “Get Lucky”. The musical universal genius from France presents himself in a completely different way on his new album – as a classical composer with an extensive orchestral work: “Mythologies” is an innovative, narrative score, which not by chance evokes spontaneous dance and movement impulses in the listener, since it was created in 2021 at the suggestion of choreographer Angelin Preljocaj for a ballet production of the Opéra National de Bordeaux. Already in Daft Punk times, Thomas Bangalter has repeatedly brought the relationship between art and technology, between man and machine, into focus. With the possibilities of orchestral sound – and against the background of timeless Greek myths and legends – Bangalter approaches the topic anew in “Mythologies” and allows a fascinating insight into his own 30-year musical development. Electronic influences fuel the orchestra’s purely analog means of expression, symphonic tradition and the lilting gesture of classical ballet meet elements of American minimal music as well as other contemporary musical styles – and are refined with a dash of French élan. “Mythologies” is the result of an extended artistic journey, variedly told in 23 scenes and colorfully dazzlingly brought to sound by the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine under Romain Dumas. Reviews BBC Music Magazine June 2023 “Bangalter is an adept creator of atmosphere and texture: Mythologies ’ 23 tracks are arresting sound capsules from possible worlds. – 4 out of 5 stars Sunday Times 9th April 2023 “Conceived as a suite for 20 dancers, Mythologies is absorbing but fitful. Its constant shifts between styles — romantic, minimalist, cinematic and more — are undoubtedly balletic, but cohesion remains elusive. |
