After Giuseppe Verdi’s “Luisa Miller” (jpc 8152771), with which Ivan Repušić made his debut as principal conductor of the Munich Radio Orchestra in September 2017, and “I due Foscari” (jpc 9260196) from October 2018, his successful cycle of early masterpieces by the Italian opera composer continues unabated: the concertante performance of Verdi’s stage work “Attila” was only just completed on the 13th day of the Munich Festival. October 2019 – also in Munich’s Prinzregententheater. Once again, outstanding performers provide for authentic fluidity and vocal sound splendour: Ildebrando D’Arcangelo in the title role and Liudmyla Monastyrska at his side lead a prominent cast. The soloist ensemble of this choral opera is complemented by the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks with a powerful voice. The Munich Radio Orchestra under the direction of Ivan Repuŝić. – A highlight of Munich’s musical life from the end of last year is now already released on BR-KLASSIK as a double CD.

Verdi’s early masterpiece “Attila” is – like the preceding “Nabucco” and “I Lombardi” – a veritable choral opera that was enthusiastically received by the Italian unification movement. Thematically, it also ties in with the efforts of the Risorgimento in torn Italy. The text line “Avrai tu l’universo, resti l’Italia a me.” (“You may have the universe, but leave Italy to me.”) was enthusiastically received from the very beginning and helped pave the way for the opera to make its way onto the stages of Italy and Europe. Not only the audience of the Habsburg governed Venice, at whose Teatro La Fenice the premiere was presented, understood the meaning of these words. Hardly any other opera by Verdi was received with such euphoria in Italy; abroad, however, the work was no longer received with such sustained reception, which may have been due to the extremely difficult part of Odabella.

The concertante performance (in original Italian) in Munich’s Prinzregententheater brought the audience unanimous cheers and was praised equally enthusiastically by the trade press. There was repeated talk of a “singing festival”; the vocal culture as well as the interpretative achievements of Ildebrando D’Arcangelo and Liudmyla Monastyrska were described with many pictorial adjectives. The Bavarian Radio Choir, it was said, had expressed its joy in the theatrical effect. And again and again the dramatic and dramaturgical context that the conducting of Ivan Repušić on the podium of the Munich Radio Orchestra was able to create was praised. This “Attila” is a true theatre Verdi: vital and powerful, fiery and highly lively.
