In a world full of recycled classical music and countless performances of church music, it has become difficult to find anything truly new and worthy of enthusiasm. Penderecki’s 1998 Credo is one such work — a masterpiece that deserves the full attention of all serious fans of choral music. It is a wonderful and well-integrated work for soloists, chorus and orchestra, and at the same time recalls the leanly textured clarity of Stravinsky and the powerful orchestral confessions of Beethoven and Brahms. The Credo is not a simple stylistic montage, however, but a fundamentally compelling work that knows how to vividly realize the meaning of its prestigious text.

Although Penderecki’s style undeniably predominates (for example, in the ensemble’s way of speaking or the rather unusual effects of the percussion instruments), the Credo breaks unusual ground with its more conventional use of harmonies and melodies. For centuries, composers have tried to avoid or shorten the long text of the Credo. Now here a 20th century master shows how to breathe life into the words by means of strong support for the musical impulse. This recording shows an exemplary blend of beautiful choral sound and virtuosic orchestral playing. (David Vernie)
