“Mozart’s treatment of the characters is masterful,” points out conductor Laurence Equilbey, “Mozart was only 16 when he composed Lucio Silla for Milan. The way he rendered the passions and agonies of the human soul shattered the conventions of opera seria.” Their current recording of the opera is the culmination of a highly acclaimed multi-year European tour that took the ensemble to Paris, Vienna and Aix-en-Provence between 2016 and 2021 The drama about politics and the confusion of love in ancient Rome did not have an easy starting point when it was written in 1772: because Mozart was not convinced by the tenor in the title role, the composer made Cecilio, his adversary for love and power, the musical focus. On the recording, countertenor Franco Fagioli now sings him and, as the French classical music website Forum Opéra notes, “gives a breathtaking Cecilio, showing his versatility as he moves from worry to frenzy. His astonishing vocal range, thrilling virtuosity and sense of nuance are given free rein.” The dictator Lucio Silla is interpreted by the Italian tenor Alessandro Liberatore, flanked by three contrasting sopranos: Olga Pudova, Chiara Skerath and Ilse Eerens. The original sound ensemble Insula Orchestra, founded by conductor Laurence Equilbey, performs on period instruments.
