The Lyric Callas: Lyric and Coloratura Arias Remastered on Vinyl La mamma morta: This aria made Maria Callas famous in a similar way to Casta Diva. And it carried the voice of the primadonna assoluta far beyond the borders of the classical music scene. It became the sounding symbol in the 1993 film drama Philadelphia. The track comes from one of the most extraordinary Callas albums, now remastered and released as a 180g vinyl: a compilation of lyric and coloratura arias, once voted by Gramophone Magazine as among the finest ever recorded by Maria Calllas. in 1954 the singer, then at the first great zenith of her success, went into the studio in London and recorded this compilation with conductor Tullio Serafin and the Philharmonia Orchestra. The term coloratura aria in the subtitle suggests outward vocal virtuosity – but what Maria Callas displays here is literally unprecedented expressive power with the help of a unique vocal control that retains a poignant simplicity even in the most difficult moments. |
