The fact that music festivals can make recording history is a rarely noticed phenomenon. In the case of probably the most famous recording of Handel’s piano suites, however, that is exactly what happened – and that too in a unique complement of two piano greats. in 1979, Svjatoslav Richter and Andrei Gavrilov played the hitherto clearly neglected group of works at the baroque Chateau de Marilly-sur-Maulne, north of the Loire, as part of the Tours Festival. The live recording is considered a milestone. In Richter and Gavrilov, the works found interpreters whose approach draws from the Romantic tradition of the Russian school.
