He was a mature composer at 19, became a conductor at 22 and wrote opera history at 23. Had there not been a child prodigy like Moart after him, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi would have gone down in music history as the genius par excellence. He died at the age of just 26. His list of works is short, but he became famous beyond all measure: Bach, Mozart, Salieri and many others were still intensively occupied with Pergolesi’s most ingenious work, his Stabat Mater, which he probably composed shortly before his death. Here, for the first time in music history, operatic expressivity and a solemn sacred atmosphere come together in a piece of church music. This important work now appears with a brilliant cast: countertenor David Daniels and soprano Dorothea Röschmann are accompanied by Fabio Biondi and his Ensemble Europa Galante. |
