Jessye Norman (Soprano)

Jessye Norman is undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary singers of recent times and one of the most decorated sopranos of all time. She moved actor Sidney Poitier to tears with her performance of “Amazing Grace” at the Kennedy Center Honors Tribute Concert in 1995.

44 CDs with studio and live concerts, orchestral songs, Christmas carols, songs from the American songbook, sacred and spiritual songs and personal favorites of Jessye Norman such as the music of Michel Legrand. All recordings were made for the Decca, Philips and Deutsche Grammophon labels.

3 DVDs complete the set, including an intimate film by André Heller with interviews and performances of many of her signature arias and songs, Christmas concerts at Notre-Dame and Ely Cathedrals and a live concert of Handel, Schubert and Schumann from the 1987 Hohenems Festival in Austria, released for the first time on DVD!

Highlights include the classic performance of Strauss’ Four Last Songs with Kurt Masur, Isolde’s Liebestod with Herbert von Karajan, Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder with Seiji Ozawa and a star-studded cast, two recordings with the legendary composer/conductor and pianist John Williams and the iconic recording of Spirituals in Concert with Kathleen Battle.

PLUS 6 previously unreleased recordings of works by Berlioz, Britten, Haydn, Strauss and Wagner with conductors Seiji Ozawa (Boston Symphony Orchestra), James Levine (Berlin Philharmonic) and Kurt Masur (Gewandhausorchester), including highlights from Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, where Jessye Norman sings both Isolde and Brangäne, demonstrating her incomparable range.

In addition to the CDs and DVDs, the edition includes a 120-page accompanying book with notes by George Hall, as well as reminiscences and tributes from friends, former colleagues and producers.
