Matthias Goerne (Baritone)Jan Lisiecki (Piano)

Ludwig van Beethoven spent his life working with the genre of song. With their new album, baritone Matthias Goerne and pianist Jan Lisiecki now show how diverse his work in this field has been. Ludwig van Beethoven: Songs – Songs is the first joint project of these two internationally acclaimed musicians Since exchange at eye level counts for him, Matthias Goerne is particularly interested in working together with concert pianists. With Beethoven in particular, he considers this to be decisive: “For the piano part is relatively complicated, it requires a virtuoso implicitness that is difficult to find among pianists Goerne found it with the Canadian and DG exclusive artist Jan Lisiecki, who recently presented a critically acclaimed recording of Beethoven’s five piano concertos. “I noticed already at our first meeting what a quick perception Jan possesses,” says Matthias Goerne, “and how great his possibilities are to be able to realize all ideas on the piano Goerne and Lisiecki have selected twelve works for their new Beethoven album, including two cycles: the “Six Songs” after Christian Fürchtegott Gellert and probably the most famous work in Beethoven’s song catalogue, the setting of “An die ferne Geliebte”.

Reviews

Fanfare Jul/Aug 2020

“For youthful ardor I will still turn to Fritz Wunderlich in An die ferne Geliebte, yet this new release is the best Beethoven song recital I’ve heard, and it bids fair to be one of the treasures in Beethoven’s vocal discography. A must-listen for lovers of Lieder in its highest expression.

Presto Music 20th March 2020

“Goerne’s now audibly careworn voice is well suited to this bleak, brooding programme of songs about isolation and resignation…One of the disc’s great virtues is the deft, imaginative pianism of Lisiecki, who astonishes at every turn…Some of the most moving moments are those where his animation seems to rub off on Goerne almost against his own better judgement: when the baritone sings ‘You give me youth and joy and courage’ in the vernal Maigesang, his words could easily be an address to his sprightly recital-partner. – Katherine Cooper
