Andrea Bocelli described him as his favourite tenor in the world of lyrical music. Guest at the world’s greatest opera houses, tenor Joseph Calleja returns with his new album “Verdi”, which will be released by Decca Classics. On this album, Calleja explores Hell and Dunkel in Verdi’s heroic tenor roles and revives Verdi’s masterpieces such as Aida, Don Carlo and Il Trovatore! Calleja began singing at the age of 16, first in his church choir and then in a formal education with the Maltese tenor Paul Asciak. As one of the greatest personalities of his homeland Malta, he was appointed first cultural ambassador in 2012. Among the arias from Il Trovatore, Don Carlo or Otello is “Celeste Aida” from the opening scene of Verdi’s Egyptian opera. Each of these roles celebrates the tenor Robusto as the vocal type of an opera hero and shows Calleja’s powerful but lyrical voice. Calleja’s new album also reflects his thriving live career – he appears regularly at the world’s leading opera houses and will sing in Puccini’s Tosca at the Royal Opera House in London from January. |
