As composer, teacher, author, pioneer and one of the greatest pianists of all time, Liszt embodied the spirit of the Romantic era in particular Elegie No. 1, best known in the solo piano version, dates from 1874, and the mysterious Elegie No. 2 followed in 1877. A somewhat different case is the “Romance Oubliée” from 1880, which also exists in arrangements for solo piano, violin and piano as well as cello and piano, but at this time Liszt was in contact with Hermann Ritter, the inventor of the viola alta (a somewhat larger viola). He had this in mind when he composed the “Romance Oubliée”, which he dedicated to knights. Less well known, “La Lugubre Gondola” comes as a composition, in two fundamentally different movements, which were mostly heard as piano solos. However, the cello and piano arrangement on this CD is contemporary. |
