“Pocket Symphonies” is the antithesis of the usual musical crossover. It is an organic piece of music, carried by inner logic and artistic necessity. A piece of music that forms a unity out of the possibilities of classical and pop musical elements in a spectacularly unspectacular way and eludes all speculations about conventional or new musical categories.

Those who know the Dresden composer and producer Sven Helbig know that he does not react to the fleeting seductive forces of the zeitgeist, but rather seeks a permanence that eludes transience. With his latest compositions, the “Pocket Symphonies” – symphonic gems in song form – he has succeeded in this in an extremely impressive way. Short, catchy, yet with the force and depth of the great classical symphonies, they draw on centuries of power and glory. Of course, one can listen to these pieces while traveling between subway stations, as they provide an excellent soundtrack for everyday life. But you can also immerse yourself in them, expanding the moment and defying the irreversibility of time. In these twelve short pieces, the here and now invites eternity to dance. Very different images underlie the twelve short pieces for orchestra and piano quartet. But they all have one thing in common. They are reminiscent of film music. This memorable imagery was deliberately chosen by Helbig. “Harmonies and melodies that have something to tell are now only used in film. In theater, that’s frowned upon, but in what other direction do you want to take so-called new music after Stockhausen? As soon as you write a beautiful melody that also reflects what you experience as a contemporary artist, then there is an association with film. Many composers would be completely unnerved if their music were compared to film music. I, on the other hand, think it’s wonderful, because these pieces are little walks through life.”
