“Phase 4 Stereo” was founded in 1961 as a Decca sub-label with the aim of achieving a particularly good sound through the use of 10-channel and later 20-channel recording consoles. This resulted in over 200 recordings. The immediacy of the sound and the wide sound panorama of the Phase 4 recordings was unique and cannot be compared with other recording methods or with the listening experience in the concert hall. No less a personage than Leopold Stokowski said: “It has always been a challenge to record Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. I believe ‘Phase 4 Stereo’ has captured this exciting music in the highest artistic and technical quality.” Six classic highlights from the series, including Rozsa’s score to Ben Hur, Dvorak’s New World Symphony and Stokowski’s interpretation of Scheherazade, are brought together in this LP box set, testifying to the spectacular work of the recording engineers, who aimed for brilliant transparency and overwhelming immediacy.
