The Polish pianist Raul Koczalski (1884-1948), who had studied with Chopin’s pupil Karl Mikuli, among others, became a celebrated Chopin interpreter in the first half of the 20th century and was at times considered the best Chopin pianist of all time. At the age of seven he was already touring Germany, Austria, France, England and Scandinavia, where the child prodigy astounded his audiences with his unusual ability. After four years of touring, he withdrew from the public eye in order to devote himself to his further training. He then continued his international concert activities. Koczalski’s leading position was based on his profound knowledge of musical styles and genres as Chopin once understood them. In this idiomatic style of playing, the melody is always played in a singable style, which also meant the rubato so typical of 19th century singers. On this double CD, Music & Arts is releasing radio recordings made by Deutsche Rundfunk in 1945 and 1948, some of which have not previously been available on recordings. |
