Already during the preparation of the recording of Vaughan Williams’ film music for “Scott of the Antarctic” six years ago, the conductor and tireless researcher of English music, Martin Yates, discovered how much film music material of the composer – partly unused – was stored in the British Library. Vaughan Williams composed based on the idea of a film without having seen a moving picture beforehand. This was also the case for the 1941 war film “49th Parallel” (The 49th Parallel) with Laurence Olivier, whose score, largely unused, Yates and the BBC Concert Orchestra now present in a completely restored version. Reviews Fanfare Sep/Oct 2023 “This recording presents a magnificent opportunity to hear for the first time an 81-minute orchestral score by Vaughan Williams in good sound. Not to be missed. Gramophone Magazine July 2023 “This is a major release. Yates secures splendid playing from the BBC Concert Orchestra in what proves a big-boned, symphonic score. |
