How about a little trip back to the “Années Folles” of 1930s Paris? But beware, the trip is not for the morally insane! For Reynaldo Hahn, the celebrated actor, playwright and screenwriter Sacha Guitry created the libretto for Ô mon bel inconnu in 1933, a lively musical comedy whose plot, in its nonchalant frivolity, was undoubtedly only possible in Paris at the time. The hatter Prosper Aubertin dreams of extramarital adventures and places a cipher ad for this purpose. To his great surprise, he receives letters in reply from his wife, daughter and maid. The work gives born singer-actors such as the incomparable Véronique Gens as the wife every opportunity to pull out all the stops of their skills. The active PALAZZETTO BRU ZANE Foundation has released a ravishing recording of this masterpiece of boulevardesque entertainment, the success of which is due in no small part to conductor Samuel Jean and the Orchestre National Avignon-Provence, which plays like sparkling champagne. |
