Wilhelm Backhaus Edition – Recordings 1908-1961

Wilhelm Backhaus needs no introduction – without a doubt, despite his dubious role in the Third Reich, he ranks among the most important German pianists of the twentieth century and enjoys genuine cult status among piano lovers due to his almost infallible playing technique. Profil now presents the most comprehensive edition devoted to his playing. The recordings span his entire career, from the first shellac records around 1908 to live recordings from Montreux in 1961. While many of these recordings were already accessible and have been extensively restored here, this box contains numerous world premieres from the private Backhaus archive, carefully remastered from acetate records and tapes – including a complete recital evening from Carnegie Hall in 1954.
