Profil Edition Günter Hänssler successively releases recordings of the great Russian musician Sviatoslav Richter, which he recorded during his “Sturm und Drang” period between 1945 and 1963. Most of them remained largely unknown in the West during the “Cold War” between East and West, since until 1960 Richter was only allowed to perform behind the “Iron Curtain”, i.e. in the Soviet Union and its vassal states. Profil Edition Günter Hänssler has already released CD box sets with Richter interpretations of works by Ludwig van Beethoven (PH 16030), Franz Schubert (PH 17005), Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms (PH 17967), Franz Liszt and Frédéric Chopin (PH 18041), and Sergei Rachmaninov and Sergei Prokofiev (PH 19052). The present edition devotes 5 CDs to the great Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich, also a supreme pianist like the composers listed above. Sviatoslav Richter’s interpretations are complemented by recordings of Emil Gilels and Tatyana Nikolayeva.
