The serenade, “night music,” singing accompanied by one or more instruments, has its roots in the early classical style of the 18th century. And the popular form developed in various directions: to the art song, to chamber music, even to the large orchestral form. In the late 19th and 20th centuries, a “serenade” essentially suggests music for string orchestra. |
