The elaborately staged Christmas film was shot in 1995 in the home of the Vienna Boys Choir. This film was mainly released in the USA on VHS and has never been released on DVD since. This is NOT a filmed concert (!) but a Christmas story based on a script how the boys celebrate Christmas in their boarding school. Of course with 98 % music / Christmas songs.

It is one of the oldest boys’ choirs in the world and even after 500 years the Vienna Boys’ Choir is still a living tradition. In 1498 Maximilian I engaged twelve boys, who formed the basis for the newly founded court chapel. Haydn already sang here, although he actually belonged to the cathedral choir of St. Stephan, and Schubert also began his musical career here. Antonio Salieri was a member of the recording jury at the time and immediately recognized the boy’s great talent. The list of composers closely associated with the Vienna Boys’ Choir is long. It ranges from Isaac, Senfl, Caldara, Fux, Salieri and the two Haydn brothers to Anton Bruckner, who as court organist rehearsed his own mass compositions with the choirboys. Since time immemorial, the connection between Christmas and music has been unshakable. A good half millennium of music history comes alive year after year in the Christmas songs. No other religious holiday has inspired composers and poets as much as this one, and if you like to call Christmas a “feast of love”, you could easily add: It’s also the Feast of Songs.
