The court kapellmeister Johann Ludwig Bach from Meiningen belongs to those members of the widely ramified family of musicians who did not care much about their worldly fame and were content to lead a down-to-earth and industrious life

Little remains of Johann Ludwig Bach’s once probably extensive oeuvre – almost two dozen sacred cantatas, about a dozen motets, a mass, a great funeral music, a secular homage music as well as an instrumental work of dubious authenticity. The cantatas in particular have repeatedly attracted the attention of researchers, as no less than 18 of them were handed down by Johann Sebastian Bach, who performed them in 1726 in his third year as cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig.
