Verdi was commissioned by the Paris Opera to write Don Carlo based on a French libretto. The model was a dramatic play by Schiller and the work was premiered in March 1867 under the title Don Carlos as a grand opera in five acts. Set in the 16th century, the work is about Carlo, the son of the Spanish King Phillip II, and his love for Elisabetta, whom Phillip later marries. The personal and political crises and conflicts that confront Carlo drive the drama forward with unwavering intensity. In 1958, the famous director Luchino Visconti was invited by the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, to stage his first opera outside Italy. The choice fell on the five-act Don Carlo in Italian, and the spectacular production was decisive in establishing this version as a repertory piece. in 1985, the Royal Opera House staged the Visconti production again, with Bernard Haitink directing a superb cast, including Ileana Cotrubas at the height of her powers and Luis Lima in the title role, unparalleled in his tortured introspection.
