Between 1899 and 1904, Paul Lacombe, who wrote mainly for orchestra or solo piano, turned again to chamber music, creating the works on the present recording The compositions of that period suggest the atmosphere of Mediterranean France, but without being pure landscape painting. Lacombe spent most of life in his native Carcassonne, far from Paris. His language recalls Saint-Saëns and Fauré: classically proportioned forms, refined melodies, and a sure sense of tonality. |
