Giulio Mazzarino, better known as Cardinal Mazarin, played an important part in the dissemination of Italian music in France in the 17th century. From 1643, when he was appointed prime minister, to his death in 1661, he carried out an astute policy in favour of Italian culture,

inviting the most famous Italian composers and performers to the French court. This disc presents a number of pieces, mainly by Italian composers, which became well known in France in the 17th century through Mazarin’s support.

The 25-year-old French countertenor Philippe Jaroussky, a new star of the early music scene with a very personal, unmistakable timbre and “outstanding technical abilities” (ClassicsToday), has worked with Gérard Lesne on the Virgin Classics recording of Alessandro Scarlatti’s oratorio “Sedecia, re di Gerusalemme” and has received enthusiastic international reviews for it. The singer, who will soon sign an exclusive contract with Virgin Classics, is now presenting his first solo recording with the ensemble La Fenice under Jean Tubéry: The CD “Un Concert pour Mazarin” (Concert for Mazarin) brings vocal and instrumental music written for or inspired by Cardinal Mazarin, one of the central figures of culture and politics in 17th century France. The Italian priest Jules Mazarin (1602-1661), successor to the infamous Cardinal Richelieu, made Italian opera flourish at the court of Louis XIV and in 17th century Europe in general. The countertenor Philippe Jaroussky and the ensemble La Fenice under Jean Tubéry present with their first joint recording “Un Concert pour Mazarin” a highly interesting and musically highly varied spectrum of Italian vocal and instrumental music at the court of the Sun King – a feast for every old music lover.
