Beatrice Rana (Piano)

Chopin’s music is distant, visionary and mysterious,” says Beatrice Rana. “There are many layers to his music. It is extremely soothing to the ear at first, but the deeper you go, the more you find …” For this album, Rana pairs Chopin’s 12 Etudes, Op. 25 with his four Scherzos, focusing on two standard musical genres that the composer’s genius transformed into something entirely new. “It was Chopin who invented the ‘concert etude,'” Rana explains. “To me, the etudes seem to be implicitly connected, linked by a single line of expression, as if taking you on a journey. The scherzos are atmospheric pieces full of contrasts … They represent three different phases of Chopin’s life and creative work, and it’s easy to read stories into them.” When Beatrice Rana played the Op. 25 Etudes at her 2019 New York recital debut, The New York Times wrote, “If you can play Cho-pin’s Etudes effortlessly, you can probably play anything ever written for the piano. In this respect, Beatrice Rana set a new standard … She not only mastered the technical challenges; she made the pieces sound as poetic and richly colored as anything Chopin ever wrote.”
