“My mass will be completely different from all others. I will show people how to talk to God,” Leos Janacek boldly announced his Glagolitic Mass. The self-confidence was no accident, for when the Czech composer wrote the work at the age of 73, he was at the height of his musical expressiveness. The Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg, one of France’s leading orchestras, recorded the Mass under the baton of Marko Letonja with a roster of sonorous names, including Swedish soprano Malin Byström and British mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnston. The album also includes Janacek’s Sinfonietta, one of his most popular works in its richness of color and facet. Janacek’s Glagolitic Mass reflects the free spirit of its creator, who was more inclined toward pantheism than church dogma. He chose Old Slavonic church chants as the textual basis (instead of the Latin mass common at the time). Even the title “Glagolitic” refers to those pre-Cyrillic writings. Due to other commitments, the composer could not prepare the premiere in Brno in 1927 himself. His substitutes, however, simplified Janacek’s complex and novel score; for a long time it was considered standard in that form. The current recording, on the other hand, is based on the critical version by musicologist Jiri Zahradka from 2011; it is an approximation of Janacek’s bold original version.
