A “shooting star of the opera scene” is how NDR Kultur celebrated countertenor Jakub Jozef Orlinski, known “as an outstanding interpreter of the music of Purcell, Vivaldi and Handel.”

With his new album Farewells, Orlinski now turns to the rarely performed art songs of his Polish homeland. The melodies already fascinated the countertenor in his student days; pianist Michal Biel had introduced him to works by their compatriot Szymanowski back then. The two have been touring with their common hobbyhorse for years: “As a Polish duo, we burn to present Polish music to our audience.” Now this has resulted in an album.

The repertoire ranges from works by Romantic composer Stanislaw Moniuszko, who, in addition to his diverse song oeuvre, also raised Polish national opera to a new level, to contemporary Pawel Lukaszewski, who was born in 1968. In Lukaszewski’s elegiac song Jesien (Autumn), for example, an expressively melancholy vocal line joins hesitantly searching piano notes. One almost thinks one hears gently falling leaves or softly trickling rain.

Countertenor Orlinski is certain that the works he has chosen speak for themselves: “I am convinced that music builds bridges and touches people, even if they don’t understand the lyrics. There are no language barriers in music”.
