The new album by Riccardo Chailly and the Filarmonica Della Scala celebrates the influence of the Italian style on three German-Austrian composers: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Schubert and Felix Mendelssohn

Recorded in Dolby Atmos in La Scala’s auditorium, “Musa Italiana” makes unique use of La Scala’s famous acoustics. Chailly explains, “Because of the need to create more space between the players, a new floor was created above the seats of the stalls

The acoustics in the center of the theater are spectacular.” The album presents Felix Mendelssohn’s “Italian Symphony” (No. 4 in A major), which he composed during a trip to Italy between 1829 and 1831, when he was in his early twenties. The symphony is inspired by the beauty of the country’s nature, culture and music. Chailly has recorded Mendelssohn’s 1834 revision of the work, which he feels enhances its drama

Also recorded were Franz Schubert’s two overtures in the Italian style. The two works, D. 590 in D major and D. 591 in C major, pay homage to Rossini, with the D major overture quoting from the opera “Tancredi” and the C major overture containing a version of the famous “Rossini crescendo.” Italy was also very influential in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s musical development; his three overtures on this album to “Mitridate,” “Ascanio in Alba” and “Lucio Silla” were all premiered in Milan.
